SEMISUBMERSIBLE LAY BARGE MEETS BASS STRAIT CHALLENGE
A discussion of the CHOCTAW the world's first semisubmersible derrick and pipelaying barge, built by Santa Fe International Corp.'s Subsidiary Santa Fe-Pomeroy Inc., and of work done by the barge in Australia's Bass Strait for Esso Standard Oil (Australia), Ltd., since Oct. 1969, covers barge design, including the ability to handle severe swells, storms, and cold; pipelaying capability; equipment, including tensioning and pipehandling systems, lineup, welding, X-ray, and field-joint stations; the stinger assembly and controls; the turbine powerplant; and platform construction capacity.
