SAFETY STANDARDS FOR LNG SET OUT BY DOT AND NFPA

The U.S. Department of Transportation has adopted interim safety standards for LNG while permanent rules are being developed specifically for LNG facilities. DOT incorporated into its regulations the revised and enlarged version of Standard 59A, approved by the National Fire Protection Association on 5/19/71. LNG facilities in place or under construction before 1/1/73 will not be subject to retroactive application of these regulations. However, such facilities must adhere to operating requirements and, after 12/31/73, to the modification and repair standards approved by NFPA. In case of conflict between NFPA and other natural gas safety regulations, the LNG facility operator may determine which standard should prevail; otherwise, both NFPA and other safety regulations must be complied with to the fullest extent possible.
