SAFETY MEASURES AND DEVICES IN PIPELINE OPERATION

Besides the usual equipment installed during pipeline construction to measure flow rate, pressures, and quality levels, equipment should be available for pollution control and other emergencies. Helicopters can be used for regular field inspection tours. A 24-hr emergency crew of at least eight men (including experienced welders and laborers) should cover a 40 mile radius and be provided with fully supplied emergency vehicles. Telecommunications can be wireless or cable (about 3-6% of pipeline cost.) Ruhrgas' method of exhausting dangerous air-gas mixtures introduced during pipeline repairs utilizes a hand cup anemometer to measure exit velocity.
