CASCADE PIPE LINE CO. PLANS 500 MILE COAL LINE IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

Research and engineering work on the project is being handled by Shelpac Research & Development Ltd., which grew out of a merger of the solids pipelining divisions of Shell Canada Ltd. and Canadian Pacific Railway, the owner of Cascade Pipe Line Co. Coking coal in concentrated slurry form might be piped directly to shipboard to be eventually pumped ashore at tidewater Japanese steel mills. There are plentiful supplies of needed pipeline water in the Kootenay district; plans are to recover the bulk of this water at the tidewater end of the pipeline in a clean, processed form for sale to area industry or utilities. By designing for maximum economic advantage on a mine-to-customer basis, the pipeline is better able to compete with the unit train.
