WHY MARINE PIPE-LAYING IS EXPENSIVE

Cost estimates filed with the U.S. Federal Power Commission show that marine pipeline construction is about twice as expensive as for comparable projects on land. This is illustrated with a recent job by Grayco Marine Corp. for Tennessee Gas Pipe Line Co. involving 33 mi of 12 through 26 in. natural gas lines. The varying size was a costly feature of the project; the contractor had to do three separate rigging jobs on the lay barge for 12 in., for 16 in., and for 26 in. pipe. The line ran through bay and marshland from the shoreline of LaFourche Parish, Louisiana, into the Gulf of Mexico. Construction details are listed.
