REQUIREMENTS FOR PIPES INTENDED FOR LIQUEFIED GAS (LPG) TRANSMISSION PIPELINES

The main requirement for pipe metal is good resistance to brittle fracture at the low temperature of the transported gas (-120 C). However, the theoretical strength should be determined, taking into account the yield point increase with decreasing temperature (from 50 kg/sq cm at 20 C to 65 kb/sq cm at -120 C). From tests conducted on steels used for pipelines and containers, minimum characteristics values were established for (1) impact strength 8 kg-m/sq cm; (2) failure initiation work 6.5 kg-m/sq cm; and (3) failure development work 1.5 kg-m/sq cm. Strength design of a pipeline for liquefied gas is in principle the same as for ordinary pipelines, with consideration of metal strengthening with decreasing temperature and other features governed by liquefied gas loads.
