NEW TOOL AIDS OFFSHORE PIPELAYING
A swivel ring flange assembly developed by Tube Turns Division of Chemetron Corp. is finding acceptance for underwater pipeline tie-in connections from Alaska to the Gulf Coast. The assembly consists of (1) a welding hub, and (2) a welded retainer that guarantees a close fit of (3) a rotatable ring that serves as a mating flange. After butt welding the flange to the tie-in pipe on the lay barge, the entire assembly is lowered to the tie-in level, and the diver swings it into position. If the bolt holes do not line up initially, the diver rotates the ring by hand to match the holes.
