A FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF ELASTIC-PLASTIC PLATES CONTAINING CAVITIES AND INCLUSIONS WITH REFERENCE TO FATIGUE CRACK INITIATION

The finite element method is used to compute stresses and strains associated with geometric and material discontinuities in large elastic-plastic plates under conditions of plane strain. The plate material is assumed to obey the Von Mises yield criterion and its associated flow rule. Numerical results are discussed in connection with a tentative criterion of fatigue crack initiation.
