DOMESTIC WASTE TREATMENT IN THE OFFSHORE ENVIRONMENT

The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the treatment of domestic wastes in the offshore environment and to deal specifically with those idiosyncrasies of such treatment which create unique problems requiring unique solutions. Aspects of offshore waste treatment covered in this paper include incentives for treatment of domestic wastes from both a legal and ecological viewpoint, unique problems encountered in offshore waste treatment on both fixed and moveable structures, comprehensive discussion of existing waste treatment technology applicable to offshore treatment, and proper operation and maintenance schedules. Based on this study, the authors conclude that technically adequate solutions to most waste treatment problems encountered in the offshore production industry do exist. Optimum use of each solution is necessary to make such solutions entirely satisfactory.
