R-CURVE CHARACTERIZATION AND ANALYSIS OF FRACTURES IN HIGH STRENGTH STRUCTURAL METALS

An equation is presented which accurately defines the dependence of energy measured in the Dynamic Tear Test on specimen geometry. The constant, R sub p, is the measure of inherent resistance to extension of fracture. The ductile fracture equation applies equally well for steels at temperatures corresponding to upper shelf fracture conditions and for aluminum alloys. It is not applicable for titanium alloys because of temperature transition effects.
