IDENTIFYING SOURCE OF PETROLEUM BY INFRARED SPECTROSCOPY

Infrared spectra of more than 50 different petroleum samples are recorded. Absorptivities of 21 bands between 650 and 1200 per cm can be used to characterize the samples. Its use in the identification of all possible petroleum samples is stressed. The method is demonstrated on laboratory samples and on a sample taken from an actual oil spill.
