Waste and residue availability for advanced biofuel production in the European Union and the United Kingdom

The authors investigated the availability of waste and residue feedstock in the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK) in 2020, with projections for 2030 and 2050. The authors included agricultural, forestry, and biogenic waste in the study, but considered only feedstock that can be collected without environmental harm. The authors considered also how much of the feedstock is currently used for energy production, as diversion of a feedstock from its current use can indirectly increase emissions of greenhouse gases. The availability projections for 2030 and 2050 indicate that while forestry residues will remain constant, biogenic waste will decrease due to the Waste Framework Directive and lower populations, and agricultural wastes will increase by 8.2% between 2020 and 2030, and 7.2% between 2030 and 2050. Together, these trends will cause a decrease in feedstock available from wastes and residues in the EU and the UK in 2030 and 2050.
