An Analysis of the Operational Costs of Trucking: 2021 Update
This report presents the results of a survey of for-hire motor carriers on 2020 operational costs. The survey, conducted during May 2021-September 2021, included 138,930 truck-tractors, and 418,520 trailers of varying types. Data includes: regional costs, fleet size, driver compensation, fuel costs, equipment costs, truck insurance premiums, and other marginal costs. Overall, the average cost per mile for motor carriers decreased in 2020 due to fuel cost reductions and driver benefit reductions. Trucking's cost per mile decreased 3.1% to $1.646 from $1.699, costs per hour were $66.87 as compared to $66.94 in 2019. Lease or purchase payments for trucks and trailers increased to 27.1 cents per mile, insurance premiums cost 8.7 cents per mile, and repair and maintenance costs decreased. The report also discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the trucking industry during 2020.
