Hopes and Fears about Autonomous Vehicles
This essay details empirical findings from research that addressed a question that is central to the societal adoption of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in a northeast US state: What do people in this state have to say about their “Hopes & Fears” regarding AVs? The authors conceptualize the societal adoption of emerging transportation technologies as the complex interplay of market forces, political processes, and consumer/community attitudes. The authors present findings from analysis of data on “Hopes & Fears” surrounding AVs at a one-day symposium that was co-sponsored by an insurance company and included among its attendees a wide range of transportation professionals including those from industry.
