STRUCTURAL EVALUATION OF SUB-BASE COURSES

Ten test tracks each of length 100 M, were constructed over black cotton soil subgrade, with 30 cm thick sub-base courses and 10 cm thick wbm base course. The sub-base course in the different test tracks consisted of different materials such as sand, soil-lime, soil-lime-pozzolana, moorum and boulder stones. The structural stability of the sub-base and base courses of the test tracks was evaluated by plate load tests. Also, Benkelman beam rebound deflection studies were carried out on the base course and the deflection bowls under the dual-wheel load were measured by special equipment. The structural evaluation of the different sub-base courses was made using the above data. The cost of each test track was worked out. Bases on the structural evaluation, the test track no 10 with moorum sub-base and no 6 with soil-lime-pozzolana over 10 cm sand blanket were rated as the best. Performance studies based on surface characteristics and maintenance requirements are to be carried out for about five years after laying the bituminous carpet surface course. (Author/TRRL)
