APPLICATION OF OPTIMIZATION METHODS WITHIN STRUCTURAL DESIGN--PROBLEM FORMULATION
After discussion of the design problem formulated as an optimization problem, the formulation of some practical ship structural design problems are described. A complete mathematical description is given for a vertically corrugated transverse bulkhead, while the formulations for the midship section of a tanker, and for a general framework design problem are more briefly discussed. An example of the practical utilization of the frame design program for a systematic study of alternative transverse frame topologies in a tanker is given.
