In recent years, many cities around the world have been working to reconstruct their road spaces from car-centered to people-centered under the keyword "Walkable". However, the concept of "Walkability" has not been sufficiently considered in terms of the Japanese urban environment. Therefore, it is necessary to examine its applicability in Japan. This research identified the issues in applying the concept in Japan by organizing the trends surrounding Walkability. In addition, based on the concept and issues, an analysis of the pedestrian environment was conducted by introducing the hierarchy of walking needs model as a case study in a target area. This resulted in obtaining suggestions on the achievements and issues in applying Walkability in Japan.
