AMELIORATION OF COMFORT FOR PASSENGERS AT STOPS

This study, based on a UITP questionnaire, covers the provision of diesel bus stops--although the same findings apply to stops for trolley coaches and streetcars. To make public transit more attractive and reduce the discomfort of the wait for its users, special attention must be given to the stopping zones. It has been shown that a shelter is essential in improving waiting conditions. The UITP study incorporates an inventory of shelters and their features. Main needs are weatherproof enclosures on three sides, transparent materials, integration of shelter design with the stopping zone (pavement, curbs, etc.), availability of complete passenger information (timetables, maps, etc.), adequate lighting, cleanliness, seating, and integration of design with the environment. With financial constraints, it is important that locations chosen for shelters be cost effective so that the majority of patrons will be served. Cooperation with advertising agencies in shelter operation is growing in popularity.
