Market analysis of heavy-duty vehicles in India for fiscal years 2019–20 and 2020–21

For optimization of vehicle emission standards and testing requirements, market analyses by vehicle type, manufacturer, weight, and engine size are needed. In India, these analyses are adopted from European standards to fit the Indian landscape, as was the case with the Bharat Stage (BS) 6 regulations that came into effect in April, 2020. To comply with the new standards, the heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) market undertook some big technological innovations. The authors analyze the first fiscal year (FY) 2020-21 of BS 6 vehicle sales and the last year of sales under the previous BS 4 standard, FY 2019-20. The authors also compare the results to their analysis of FY 2017-18, the first year of sales for BS 4 vehicles in India. In India the three biggest manufacturers had nearly 85% of sales in FY 2019-20 and 87% in FY 2020-21. Tata Motors held about 46% of the market in FY 2019-20 and about 49% in FY 2020-21. Engine manufacturers in India build smaller bus and truck engines than in the United States and Europe, and any changes in engine size trends would be guided by vehicle weight ratings. The authors’ analysis shows that manufacturers in India complied with BS 6 standards, and that nearly all BS 6 vehicles have diesel particulate filters (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), with more than 55% fitted with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and ammonia slip catalysts (ASC).
