EXPERIMENTAL TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM ON THE RAILWAY BY MEANS OF FIBRE OPTICS

The rapid and promising development of the fibre optics technique in the telecommunications field has suggested to the FS the advisability of effecting an experimental transmission system on the railway in order to obtain useful elements of evaluation with regard to the influence of the environment on the system itself. After a brief mention of the main principles of transmission in fibre optics and of the PCM technique, an illustration is given of the plant which will be placed in operation, over length of about 14 kms. on the Maccarese-Palo Laziale section of the Rome - Genoa line, and which envisages a cable of 6 fibre-optics, digital systems at 2 and 8 Mbit/s and an analog system to make connections of the telephonic, video and data transmission type.
