FRICTION AND JOURNEY SPEED ON ROADS WITH VARIOUS WINTER ROAD MAINTENANCE

Friktion och reshastighet på vägar med olika vinterväghållning

Under the heading "winter road maintenance - the influence of various operational measures on traffic" the institute investigates the effects on traffic of among other things sanding and salting. The purpose of this investigation is to clarify effects with regard to traffic safety, travelling speed, trafficability and friction. For practical reasons this work is divided into different substudies, each one giving a picture of the conditions in a certain road and traffic environment. In this report we intend to show how different standards of winter road maintenance influence both friction and journey speed. Stopping distances are calculated from the variables measured and are used as a complement to traffic accident. The studies were carried out on 16 roads with various traffic volumes, geometrical standards and winter road maintenance during the winters of 1978/79 and 1979/80. (Author/TRRL)
