General Safety Regulation: Technical Study to Assess and Develop Performance Requirements and Test Protocols for Various Measures Implementing the New General Safety Regulation, for Accident Avoidance and Vehicle Occupant, Pedestrian and Cyclist Protection in Case of Collisions

The European Commission sought to update the General Safety Regulation for Europe to include new and developing technologies with the aim of reducing Europe’s annual road fatalities. The European Commission requested support in the development and finalisation of secondary type-approval legislation for the following vehicle safety measures: Intelligent Speed Assistance, Emergency Lane Keeping System, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (heavy duty), Advanced Emergency Braking (light duty, vehicles pedestrians/cyclists), Direct Vision & Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection (heavy duty), Reversing Safety, Event Data Recorder, Frontal Full-Width Impact, Driver Drowsiness and Attention Monitoring, Advanced Distraction Recognition & Driver Availability Monitoring Systems, Pedestrian and Cyclist Enlarged Head Impact Zone, Driver Availability Monitoring System, and Event Data Recorder (heavy duty). TRL (Transport Research Library) conducted a technical study to assess and develop performance requirements and test protocols for these measures.
