CONTROL OF TANKER DE-BALLASTING OPERATIONS
Specifications (IMCO convention) for a system that monitors the oil content of a ship's overboard discharge for the prevention of pollution of the sea are summarized, and the author then describes how the monitoring system produced by his company complies with these specifications. System components, including the sample probe and its placement; location of the operating controls, read out and alarms; the location of all electrical components on the safe side of the pumproom/engineroom bulkhead, with controls, drives and optical paths being via approved penetration; and the processing technique, which indicates the oil content of the discharge, are all briefly described. The author states that through the use of this system pollution free operation of tankers using the load-on-top procedure can be realized.
