FULL SCALE TEST AND THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF THE TRANSVERSE STRENGTH OF 372,000 DWT TANKER "NISSEKI MARU"

The 372,000 DWT tanker "NISSEKIMARU", one of the largest oil tankers in the world, has been designed after much investigation by theoretical analysis using several computer programs based on the finite element method. To confirm the strength of the ship and accuracy of the theoretical analysis of tankers a strength experiment and theoretical analysis was performed in cooperation with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai. From the results of experiment, it has become clear that the ship has about the same strength as other large tankers. And, comparing with the results of the experiments, theoretical analysis is sufficiently accurate for the design purpose.
