Impaired & Distracted Driving Data Comparison
This report compares alcohol-related fatalities in Canada with distraction-related fatalities for 2017. In addition, it examines trends from 2008-2017. Data sources include Traffic Injury Research Foundation's (TIRF's) National Fatality Database and survey data from TIRF's Road Safety Monitor. Canadian roads saw 1,873 fatalities in 2017, 480 (25.6%) were alcohol-related and 474 (25.3%) were distraction-related. Additional 2017 data includes: fatalities by age group, sex, season of crash, day type, time of crash, number of occupants, and vehicle type. Trends (2008-2017) indicate an average of 23.3% deaths related to distracted driving crashes and 29.7% due to alcohol-related crashes. Alcohol-related crashes have steadily decreased from 34.0% in 2008 to 25.6% in 2017. The percentage of distracted driving-related crash fatalities have, in general, increased from 21.2% in 2008 to 25.3% in 2017.
