In bulletin number 4, the first on the behaviour of ships in confused seas, fundamentals of this theory are shown from the naval architectural view point. The purpose of this paper is to show how to utilize this theory in the study of ships in a confused sea. Some parts which are not important in understanding the main idea of the paper, are printed in different types so that they may be ignored during the first reading. Moreover, sometimes a rigorously theoretical development was neglected to aid an immediate understanding of the subject. In the first part of the paper, an effective mathematical model of a confused sea is built up, stating hypotheses fully in accordance with the facts; a random factor is introduced so as to give rise to a random function to be studied by means of its power spectral density function. In the second part, criteria generally adopted to determine spectral density functions are shown, either with a theoretical or experimental procedure, by means of the harmonic analysis of results, as a function of space and time of a survey on the fetch of the sea.
