Impact of Seasonal and Diurnal Profile Measurements on Surface Roughness of Rigid Pavements—LTPP SMP Study

Assessment of the surface smoothness and roughness over time, estimated from longitudinal profile measurements, help determine a pavement’s functional performance. These profile measurements, generally summarized by IRI, are influenced by temporal (seasonal temperature/moisture and daily temperature) variations. The LTPP SMP study is designed to evaluate the influence of such variations. The data analyses show that profile measurement season and time significantly impact the IRI of jointed concrete pavements derived from these measurements. Relating the observed effects with the recorded ambient temperatures at the time of profile measurements can help develop general guidelines for profile measurements on JPCP within different climatic regions. The best temperature ranges for profile measurement in freeze (i.e., DF and WF) regions are between 50 and 65°F; while for the non-freeze (i.e., DNF and WNF) climatic regions, profile measurement is suitable between 50 and 70°F. Data show that spring and fall seasons for DF, winter and fall seasons for DNF, and no season limitation for the wet climatic regions for profile measurements on rigid pavements. Further, results show that afternoon time is better for profile measurements on rigid pavements.
