FACTORS IN THE SELECTION OF INERT GAS SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

This article presents factors which should be considered before the installation of an inert gas system. In designing the original inerting and gas freeing systems, it was realized that the supply and venting connections should be displaced from one another by the greatest distance possible and be positioned at the top and bottom of the tank. Two general systems are in common use, and they are described, and comments that apply to both systems are given and explained. System components, such as scrubbers, fans, deck sealing arrangements, and appropriate instrumentation are all described, with the preferred type of each arrangement given and explained.
