How many road deaths is too many?: The challenge of meeting road safety targets
Resolution 64/255 was adopted in 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly, designating 2011-2020 as the ‘Decade of Action for Road Safety’. The goal was to reduce the forecasted numbers of road accident fatalities by improving road safety. Specific targets for casualty reduction were adopted through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and one hundred and sixty-nine targets to stimulate action over fifteen years. The UN’s voluntary global performance targets for highway risk factors built on the SDGs and associated goals. Twelve specific goals were set for up to 2030, covering road safety management, improved road and mobility safety, safer vehicles, better safety for road users, and post-crash response. The authors focus on discussion and analysis of road safety goals at a state level in the European Union. The benefits of conducting analyses at more local levels are studied, especially where priorities for a city do not fall in lign with priorities at state level.
