Assessing the Equity of Portland’s Traffic Signal Maintenance
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) in Oregon, USA, holds advancing equity and addressing structural racism as an overarching principle. The daily gatherings in 2020 and the public’s call for justice pushed the city's Signals & Street Lighting (SSL) Division to think more critically about its role in the city and how the SSL Division can apply its work to this important mission. This article discusses an evaluation of traffic-signal requests and visits for inspection and maintenance, which was conducted as a starting point to help PBOT SSL move towards a more just transportation system that considers everyone living in and traveling throughout Portland.
