Possible future port design options have to be carefully studied to provide for the safe handling of hazardous cargoes. First early new port developments will probably occur in offshore areas so that very large crude carriers can be used in the petroleum trades. Simultaneously, some ports are upgrading facilities for container handling and therefore are considered entering an interim stage. Final design 20 years hence will be in the form of a Transport where marine, rail, aircraft, and road facilities will be grouped together to improve transfer operations. Several forms of vertical design are presented to show the potential of the Transport idea.
