FAILURE ANALYSIS OF ROLLING BEARINGS BY X-RAY MEASUREMENT OF RESIDUAL STRESS

Compressive residual stresses peak below the surface and if present, represent the position of maximum shearing stress due to normal contact pressure. Unexpected overloading is confirmed by this method. However, bearings often fail without such overloading. Early failures were observed to be associated with the residual stress changes near the surface. The influences of sliding, vibration and surface roughness on residual stress changes are discussed.
