Teddy Bears and Driving Automation: An on-Road Paradigm to Evaluate Situational Awareness

This paper is a supplement to the research study, Bears in Our Midst: Familiarity with Level 2 Driving Automation and Situational Awareness of on-Road Events. In this study, volunteer drivers of various familiarity with Level 2 (L2) driving automation systems, adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane centering, were observed to measure situational awareness. While driving, a vehicle with a large pink teddy bear on the rear of the vehicle passed the participants. A survey and video analysis determined that those participants unfamiliar with L2 driving automation had less situational awareness while using L2 systems than those drivers with greater familiarity. In this supplementary study, the authors discuss lessons learned from the on-road observation study and discuss experimental procedure, data collection, and vehicle settings and equipment.
