Bears in Our Midst: Familiarity with Level 2 Driving Automation and Situational Awareness of on-Road Events
This study looked at how familiarity with Level 2 (L2) driving automation impacted the situational awareness of 31 volunteer drivers. Drivers with various levels of familiarity with adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane centering systems were video recorded while driving a 2019 Mercedes-Benz C300. During the drive they were passed by a vehicle with an oversized pink teddy bear on the rear of the vehicle. Driver surveys and video analysis of eye glance behavior revealed that inexperienced L2 users had poorer situational awareness while using L2 systems. L2 driving automation support gave drivers situational awareness advantage only when the driver was already familiar with L2 systems.
