STEPPERS AND P.M. MOTORS COMPETE FOR CONTROL APPLICATIONS
A comparison is presented between synchronous stepping motor and d.c. servomotors with permanent-magnet excitation (permanentic motors) for control applications. It is argued that for control applications, the p.m. motor would appear to have the edge with regard to efficiency and size vs power, but the stepper motor is very suitable for precise position control without requiring feedback.
