FINITE ELEMENT OPTIMIZATION OF A WEB FRAME

The purpose of this thesis is to optimize a web frame of a tanker subject to three loading conditions, and to investigate how this optimum varies as the ties of the wing tanks are changed in postition. The analysis is to be made using the Finite Element Method coupled with a Double Iteration Procedure, based on a chosen optimality criterion. With this objective in mind a computer program "GLORIA", was developed to carry out the above analysis. Two satisfactory designs representing a saving in weight of 39.3% and 39.0% with respect to the original web frame resulted from the analysis.
