ANALYSIS OF TANK AND HULL SUPPORT STRUCTURES FOR LNG TANKERS

The objective of this thesis is to structurally evaluate the tank support structure and hull of an LNG tanker designed by Societe Technigaz. the required tasks include (1) determining the loads on the tank, tank supports, and hull due to seakeeping motions and (2) determining the stresses in the hull and tank support system for these loading conditions. An in-depth analysis of the seakeeping properties of the tanker is performed. Loads due to static forces on the tanks and supports due to the weight of the cargo and tank materials, dynamic wave forces on the hull, hydrostatic forces on the hull, and forces which are transmitted from the ship through the support system to the tanks are found by using the 5-D Ship Motions Program developed under the auspices of the Maritime Administration. Given the various loading conditions, the finite element method as developed in the ICES STRUDL II program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is used to determine the stresses and deflections on the various members of the LNG quarter tank section. The stress distribution stresses in the supporting skirt may cause buckling unless high strength steels are used in this area.
