FIGURATIVE SIGNING ON "KRIMPENERWAARD"-INTERSECTIONS: AN INVESTIGATION INTO ALTERNATIVES FOR THE EXISTING SYSTEM

The authors have attempted to determine whether the system of figurative signing that is in use on intersections of the so-called "krimpenerwaard" type must be considered to fulfil its purpose any longer. Three alternative systems have been investigated along with the existing system. 300 subjects have been shown films of krimpenerwaard intersections, and their patterns of preference for the system were determined afterwards. None of the alternative systems obtained a systematic preference over the existing system. However, certain groups of subjects showed a clear preference for the existing system. We conclude from this that there are no reasons to replace the existing system by any of the alternatives investigated. (TRRL)
