THE SOIL MECHANICS OF TEMPORARY WORKS

A discussion is reported which examined the application of soil mechanics theory and practice to temporary works. General points covered illustrated the differences between temporary and permanent works design. Relative to permanent works, the design of temporary works can be uncertain because: (1) the behaviour of clay soils can only be predicted less accurately, (2) there may be lower correlation between design assumptions and site realisation, (3) soil-structure interaction may be more complex, and (4) some design cases are peculiar to temporary works. Design methods for temporary works therefore need to be quick, simple and able to achieve a balance between safety and economy. Speakers debated aspects of temporary works design covering stability of side slopes, factor of safety and earth pressure. (TRRL)
