THE ADVANTAGES OF THE SINGLE BUOY STORAGE SYSTEM (SBS)
At the Ashtart oil filed offshore Tunisia, a 70,000 dwt storage barge is permanently moored to a modified single buoy mooring (SBM) by a rigid A-frame hinged only at the vessel end and incorporating the SBM turntable and oil piping. The absence of floating hoses and bowhawsers enables continuous loading, even during heavy storms. An electric power supply from the platform restricts the necessary personnel to those required for maintenance, loading, unloading, etc. Model tests show that offtaking tankers can remain safely moored alongside in 14 ft waves.
