AN IMPROVED SHIPPING CONTAINER FOR FISSILE MATERIAL
Based on an ORNL design, an improved shipping container for fissile materials has been developed. This container has passed the normal and accident tests proposed in the current revision of AEC Safety Standards. Further, a criticality analysis by the LRL Criticality Safety Advisory Group has established quantitative limits for shipping solid forms of enriched uranium and plutonium according to AEC criteria for Class I, Class II, and Class III categories. Tests made on simulated quantities of fissile material indicate the degree of internal heat buildup that can be expected in this container. ( auth )
