WAVE-EXCITING FORCES AND MOMENTS ON A DRILL SHIP UNIFORMLY ADVANCING IN OBLIQUE SEAS

A strip method is presented for evaluating the wave-exciting forces and moments acting on a restrained ship uniformly moving in oblique regular waves. The strip method which was presented by the author at the 1970 Houston OTC Conference (Paper No. OTC-1180) has been extended to accommodate forward speed. The sectional wave-exciting forces and moments are evaluated by satisfying the kinematical boundary condition as a diffraction problem based on the close-fit technique. Extensive numerical calculations are made for a Series 60 single hull model and for an ASR catamaran (twin hull). The correlations between experimental and theoretical results for these models, on the whole, confirm the reliability of the present method.
