BLAST FURNACE SLAG AND LOW DURABILITY ROCK BLENDS AS PAVEMENT MATERIALS IN ROAD TRIAL PERFORMANCE TESTING
Rock reserves of a type capable of meeting specification requirements for the production of road base are extremely limited in the Sydney metropolitan area. As an alternative to importing suitable material with the inherent high transportation cost, blue metal and gravel limited has undertaken a three year investigation into the potential use of a lower durability but extensive reserve of picrite available at its prospect quarry. Part of this investigation involved the production of a blend of picrite with crushed blast furnace slag available from the Port Kembla steelworks. This paper details the conclusions of the suitability of this blend drawn from extensive laboratory testing, the results of large scale road simulator trials conducted at the university of new south Wales and early results available from full scale road sections constructed using the blend and control sections of fine crushed rock. This technique of blending a local lower durability rock with imported material suggests economies in the amount of material requiring transport and may be suitable in areas deficient in high quality rock reserves.
