History Stays Intact

The innovative replacement of the historic IL 89 bridge over the Illinois River has resulted in a safer connection between the surrounding communities in Putnam and Bureau Counties, as detailed in this article. Due to significant deterioration, the need to find a solution to replace the bridge became imminent. A detour route was not possible, so innovative engineering techniques were necessary to build a new nine-span, steel plate girder structure on an offset alignment. Special design considerations were necessary for this alignment, including settlements, vessel collision, and river hydraulics. After overcoming several complex design challenges, the replacement project resulted in a more efficient and safe river crossing through innovation.
