ShareSim - A Discrete Event Simulator to Evaluate Carsharing System Performances

Sharing systems represent a new generation of mobility concepts, strongly supported by information and communications technologies, implying a continuous connection between system operators, customers/end-users and transport infrastructures. Carsharing is one of the most widespread sharing mobility system. The increase of fleets’ size and carsharing users require identifying relaible operational strategies in order to guarantee financial sustainability and high level of service. Specifically, it is crucial to define the optimal fleet size and its configuration on the network to respond to the carsharing market growth. In this paper, authors present the first release of ShareSim, an innovative discrete event mobility simulator for sharing mobility systems. ShareSim is a useful tool for analyzing, planning and managing both electric and conventional fuel sharing mobility systems, which proved to be particularly suitable for carsharing. ShareSim has been implemented in python: it consists of five modules and two extensions implemented as Qgis scripts. ShareSim provides algorithms for generating different demand and supply scenarios. It contains a comprehensive set of options to manage both energy levels and recharging of electric powered vehicles. Apart from describing simulator features, this paper will present applications performed with ShareSim on several test networks with different level of complexity in terms of configuration of road network structure (i.e. metropolitan areas, conurbations, urban areas). The aim of the applications is to highlight how the fleet performance worsening is linked to the way refloating activity is managed as well as to urban mobility patterns. The simulator is a novel piece of work that could help sharing companies in defining their car sharing deploying strategies.
