Factors Influencing Quality of Service in Road Safety at Urban Roundabouts, Based on Driver’s Perception

In recent years many countries have developed an interest in obtaining a measure of quality of service for transportation facilities. The Highway Capacity Manual (HCM2010) describes specific techniques to evaluate the traffic handling ability of a transportation facility through measuring the Level of Service (LOS). But it has also introduced the concept of Quality of Service (QOS) to assess the perceived performance of the transportation facility from the viewpoint of users. While there is no significant work on roundabouts quality of service, this study tries to identify and assess the factors affecting the safety perception of drivers while navigating through an urban roundabout. The tool used was a questionnaire, filled out by about 1.100 participants. Within the framework a statistical analysis methodology has been developed and implemented, creating a Regression analysis model. The model relates the key factors that play a significant role in safety parameter of a roundabout. The considerations arising from the final model are the following: 1) there are certain key factors affecting the safety perception of different users, while navigating urban roundabouts; 2) the participants' opinions regarding the safety perception of roundabouts are not preconceived ideas, but they originate from specific safety perceptions due to roundabout geometric configurations; 3) the users in Greece are in favor of roundabouts and they strongly believe that roundabouts are a safer type of intersection compared to other types of intersections; this is an important confirmation of most results in the literature. The results of the research have implications regarding theory, infrastructure and the application of safety recommendations regarding roundabout evaluation.
