Route Optimization Issues and Initiatives in Bangladesh: The Context of Regional Significance

Implementation of ITS (Intelligent Traffic System) and algorithm-based route optimization methods in the transportation network has opened a new dimension to overcome the challenges of maintaining the demand and supply chain in transportation. Algorithm-based route optimization is now used to identify the optimum way and convenience such as congestion relief, make travel time more reliable for their customers and improve the economy and productivity of their vital assets, which is very important for developing countries like Bangladesh in terms of the availability of data and scope for implementation. At the same time, proper identification of active factors, categorization of the problems, and suitability of needed parameters are key issues to address those in a transportation network. This paper focuses on identifying the major scopes and limitations of the transportation system of Bangladesh, finds the applicability of popular static and dynamic route optimization algorithms from different angles as well as analyze the compatibility of developing those models in the overall transportation system of Bangladesh.
