Feasibility Study on the Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels- Burkina Faso

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has developed partnerships with international organizations and Member States to develop assistance projects that would improve fuel efficiency by 2 percent per year and keep net carbon dioxide emissions at 2020 levels. Member State Burkina Faso has created a State Action Plan for carbon dioxide emissions reduction. One element of this action plan is the development and use of sustainable aviation fuels. The first chapter of this report introduces ICAO's environmental protection efforts and provides an overview of sustainable aviation fuels. The second chapter discusses country-specific production parameters. In the third chapter, feedstock sources for biofuel production are evaluated. These include starch and sugar crops, lignocellulosic biomass, waste material, jatropha, and other oil-bearing feedstocks. The fourth chapter examines feedstock expansion and market potential. The fifth chapter explores critical factors for success, such as farmer mobilization and supply chain optimization. The sixth chapter presents sources of financing. In the seventh chapter, some conclusions are offered. The eighth and final chapter provides a roadmap for implementation of sustainable aviation fuels in Burkina Faso.
