Recycled Plastics in Asphalt Part A: State of the Knowledge
This report focuses on the use of recycled plastics in asphalt mixtures. Chapter one begins with a discussion of the abundance of plastic waste and how the asphalt industry can be part of the solution for managing this waste. Other recycled asphalt materials: tire rubber, shingles, and reclaimed asphalt pavement are examined for lessons learned. Chapter two looks at types of plastics and current recycling efforts. Chapter three summarizes a literature review on the use of recycled plastics in asphalt binders and mixtures. Topics covered include: methods of incorporation, laboratory binder characterization, laboratory mixture characterization, plant operations, environmental impact, health and safety, and field projects. Chapter four identifies knowledge gaps and future research needs. The full literature review is available in a separate publication entitled Recycled Plastics in Asphalt Part B: Literature Review.
