Renewable Energy for Aviation: Practical Applications To Achieve Carbon Reductions and Cost Savings

The objective of this guidance document is to provide the Member States of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) information on how to utilize renewable energy to reduce CO₂ emissions from international aviation. The first section introduces information on energy and climate change, aviation energy reduction opportunities; the parties involved in aviation energy reduction; the ICAO-United Nations Development Programme Assistance Project to support capacity building in developing States for aviation-related CO₂ emissions reduction; and the ICAO-European Union Assistance Project to support similar efforts in 14 African and Caribbean States. The second section details renewable energy as applied to airports. The third section describes project conceptualization for airports considering a renewable energy option. The fourth section addresses project financing. The fifth section offers an example of how to plan an airport solar project. Lastly, the sixth section examines eight different case studies of airport renewable energy projects.
